L'histoire : Hynkel, dictateur fou furieux et antisémite, s'installe au pouvoir. Dans le même temps, un modeste barbier juif, devenu amnésique pendant la guerre de 14-18, tombe amoureux de la jeune Hannah. Fait surprenant, le barbier ressemble trait pour trait au dictateur... Entrepris dans le plus grand secret dès 1938, le scénario du 'dictateur' provoqua tout de suite les protestations de l'ambassadeur allemand aux Etats-Unis et d'organisations américaines pro-nazies.
Commentaire: Le film qui demeure une des grandes oeuvres de Chaplin, par-delà la caractère caricatural du personnage du dictateur, et du message final qu'll délivre est surtout le reflet de la vision américaine de la guerre européenne au début des années 1940 : une armée allemande désorganisée, avec du matériel obsolète, pour une campagne qui ne devrait pas s'éterniser
